Museum Committee - The Chambers County Historical Museum complex includes Chambersea and the Dr. Schilling Medical Building. This committee is charged with preserving and enhancing the existing artifacts included in these buildings; providing access to them through guided tours and general open service hours; and now, with the advent of new digital software, providing access to the collections online through the Chambers County Library System website.
Monument Committee - This committee is charged with identification and preservation of physical structures throughout the county, including cemeteries.
Oral History Committee - This committee has been active for many years to interview residents about their pasts as well as memories they may have of their communities. The digital preservation of these interviews is in progress, and will soon be available online. We are always looking for volunteers willing to be interviewed about their memories of school days, business and commerce, or family stories.
Historical Preservation Committee - Acquisition, preservation, storage, and display of historical papers, records and documents; establishment, improvement, enlargement and/or support of an historical museum; composing or updating county history; reprinting of scarce historical material and publications.
Historical/Protected Properties Committee - Local recognition of historic buildings and sites is part of this committee's work.
Historical Marker Committee - Study of, survey of, and review of subjects and sites for possible markers; preparation and submission of appropriate applications; updating of marker lists; providing security for locations; obtaining permission for erection of markers.
The common belief is that the Historical Commission is in charge of the Museum, the Chambers Home, and the Schilling Office, and that is all. In truth, the Commission is much more active in a variety of areas, preserving local history if it is available, and gathering it so it can be preserved, if it is not currently accessible. Here are listed the Commission's standing Committees and their purpose. Volunteer assistance is continually needed!
