During a Regular Meeting on Saturday, the Chambers County Historical Commission made plans to conduct the annual Ghost Watch at the General Thomas Jefferson Chambers Home in Anahuac. The event will take place on Friday night, October 30th immediately following the children’s program at the County Library, which is located next door to the Chambers Home. Strange sightings have occurred in past years and kids of all ages are encouraged to attend. The Commission also made plans to conduct the annual Toy Drive to collect toys for needy children throughout the County. This year’s events will occur on Saturday, December 5th and Saturday, December 12th at the Chambers Home. The home will be decorated and open from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm on these two Saturdays and light refreshments will be served throughout the day. The public is invited to participate in this worthy cause. Plans were also made for the next Essay Contest for the three school districts located in the County. The contest has a Junior Division for grades 7 thru 9 and a Senior Division for grades 10 thru 12. The topics that a student may choose from are: 1. Haunted Homes/Businesses/Places of Chambers County; 2. Lost/Buried Treasures of Chambers County; 3. Early Trails, Ferries, and Roads in Chambers County; and 4. Outstanding Characters of Early Chambers County. The contest officially starts October 26, 2009 and the deadline for Essay entry is April 24, 2010. The Historical Commission meets on the fourth Saturday of each month in the Museum/Archives Building in Anahuac and the public is urged to attend. Anyone that desires to become a member should contact Chair Bob Wheat at 409-267-6599 or visit the museum to obtain an application. Commission members are appointed by the Chambers County Commissioners Court. |
