At a Regular Meeting of the Chambers County Historical Commission last week, Chair Bob Wheat announced that he would be retiring as Commission Chair when the term ends in January 2011. Wheat has served as Chair for over ten years and he stated that it was time for new blood and new ideas to lead the Commission. During his tenure, the Commission has seen a growth in membership as well as community interest. Major accomplishments have been the Museum/Archives Building, outlining Fort Anahuac in the Park, Historical Markers for the George Washington Carver School and various Historical Cemeteries as well as the annual History Essay Contest at the three school districts in the County.
In other business, the various committee chairs gave reports o their activities. Of major interest was the report that Ms. Lisa Whittington of the Chambers County Probation Department was continuing to provide assistance with Adult Probationers to clean several old cemeteries located within the county. The Stubbs Cemetery located on the west side of the County is undergoing a major cleaning and restoration at this time. Anyone with information about any old or abandoned cemeteries is encouraged to contact the Historical Commission.
Cheryl Shaw, Chair of the Statues Committee reported that work is continuing to determine the appearance of the proposed statues for Fort Anahuac Park. The statues will be in memory and recognition of the three sons of Anson Taylor and William B. Travis, all who died at the Alamo. Anson Taylor and his family lived on a farm south of Anahuac near what is now known as Round Point.
The Commission also approved the construction of a glass display case in the Museum to house the various military uniforms and other military items that are on display. Several other items have been offered to the Commission as soon as a secure display area has been constructed.
The Commission meets the fourth Saturday of each month in the Museum Building at 9:00 am and the public is urged to attend. Anyone that is interested in joining the Commission should contact the Chair or visit the Museum to receive an application. Commission members are appointed by the Chambers County Commissioners Court.
