HISTORICAL COMMISSION RECOGNIZES
TRAVERSOK BARBER SHOP

May 25, 2011

Last week, the Chambers County Historical Commission recognized the Harry Traversok Barber Shop in Barbers Hill for its historical significance in Chambers County.

The shop was built in the early 1900’s by Mrs. Watson Williams. She had received an inheritance and wondered aloud to her husband what she might do with the money. He replied that the money was hers and that she should do whatever she wanted to do with it. She said “I thought that I might build a shop for that young barber that wants to come out here.” His reply was “ Well its your money and you can do what you want to but you know how barbers are, they don’t stay in one place very long.”

Mrs. Williams built the shop and rented it to Harry Traversok, Sr. and he occupied it until his retirement in 1953.

The building and tenancy are recorded in the records in the Chambers County Courthouse. Information on the building and the conversation by Mr. and Mrs. Williams was provided to Mr. Walter Farrell, Mt. Belvieu Museum Director, by Bobby Joe Austin, a grandson of the couple.
