MARTHA GODFREY MARKER DEDICATED

The Saint Paul’s United Methodist Church and the Chambers County Historical Commission performed a Grave Marker Dedication Ceremony for the grave of Martha Godfrey, who lived from 1812-1905.

Martha Godfrey lived most of her life in Double Bayou and she donated the land for the church as well as the cemetery which bears her name. Her grave was unmarked and only know to be located within four cedar trees. Two of the cedar trees remain today and a third was lost to Hurricane Ike. The marker was placed within the opening between those trees.

Bertha White read the life story of Martha Godfrey while Dianne Carrington performed a pantomime re-enactment of her life. Following this service, the marker was unveiled as R.B. Scherer, Jr. gave an obituary. Master of Ceremonies was Bob Wheat, Historical Commission Chair.
