The Chambers County Historical Commission presented awards to two East Chambers ISD 8th graders for winning the 2010 Historical Essay Contest.

The first place winner was Andrew McGovern, who wrote about his great-great grandfather, Martin Franzen. He was writing under the category of People who had influenced the history of Chambers County. His essay provided the history of the Martin Franzen family and their contributions to the Winnie-Stowell area. For his efforts, Andrew was awarded the First Place Trophy, a $50.00 Savings Bond donated by Security State Bank of Anahuac and a Certificate recognizing his participation.

The second place winner was Brandon Johnson who wrote under the same category and provided a history of the Karankawa Indians. His essay depicted the life of these Native Americans who roamed the Trinity River long before Chambers County was created. The second place prize was a trophy and a Certificate for participating.

In all, the Commission received thirty one essays from East Chambers and all of the other contestants received Certificates recognizing their participation. Last year, only one student participated from East Chambers and the Commission looks forward to an even greater participation next year.
